Etharkkum Thunindhavan Review: What was the need of Suriya in Etharkkum Thunindhavan?

Person worship is the reality of life in Tamil films especially if they are actors of the film. This happens many times with Tamil film super star Surya. His film ‘Jai Bheem’ was a powerful film made on such a subject that it was sent to the Oscars and in this film, Suriya performed amazingly in the role of a lawyer fighting the battle of poor tribals. Right after this, his next film ET i.e. Atharakkum Thunindhavan was recently released on Netflix. Asha tied to Jai Bheem is completely shattered in this film because this film is a masala entertainer in which action, villain, emotion and love story, romance have been put in addition to dance songs. The film has rocked the box office and has earned 100 crores in first 5 days and 200 crores in 21 days. Suriya has star power in the film but there is no much fun in the story and in many places this film has also become a victim of over-dramatization. Suriya’s fans will love this film very much, but if we look at Suriya’s acting ability, then this film would have been similar with any other actor instead of Suriya.

The story of the film seems very strange. In the beginning, the friendship of the two villages is shown turning into enmity and despite this, Surya goes to watch a dance program in the other village. Surya is a lawyer by profession, but he is the hero of the film, so he fixes the lock of the car of the girls in trouble, installs emergency apps on the girls’ phones, gives legal help to the harassed people and then goes to the heroine’s village on the birth anniversary of Lord Murugappa. They also do daring things like cleverly wearing mangalsutra in a crowded mandap. The heroine’s friend in Shatru village falls in love with the chamcha of a corrupt contractor who forces her to sleep with a minister. The heroine’s friend runs away, the goons chase her and the hero saves her. When Hero learns of the plot, he threatens to eliminate the contractor and a war is declared between the two. After a series of incidents and accidents, Hero teaches a lesson to the contractor and exposes all of them in front of the parents of his children. The father-in-law of the contractor shoots the contractor because his daughter was also killed by the contractor. Everything goes well and the hero wins.

Seeing the story of the mutual fight between the villages, it seemed that the Tamil version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet would be seen. Seeing the hero of a village and the heroine of an enemy village, he was further confirmed, but the story went somewhere else. Emergency app, MMS, YouTube videos and an excellent state of the art technology center were all put in to make it modern and the hero was also shown fighting with it all. The story of Hero’s younger sister being kidnapped and raped was also inserted in the flashback. Such khichdi was made that what was important in the story was hidden somewhere. Suriya does commercial films but his films will be less with such bizarre story. Prior to this, his ‘Jai Bheem’ was released, whose story-screenplay-dialogues, all three were amazing and Surya’s character as a lawyer was also believable. Ethrakkum Thunindhavan, being a masala film, could not properly capitalize on Suriya being a lawyer. However, all these things have not affected the film and the film has made a big splash at the box office and is also appearing in the top 10 films of India on Netflix.

The case of acting is slightly better. It is as much fun watching Suriya as a masala entertainer as in his other films. Heroine is Priyanka Arul Mohan. This is his second Tamil film after Doctor. Career is not huge but she is beautiful and talented. Satyaraj, who became immortal by playing the role of Katappa in Bahubali, has become Surya’s father in this film. The role is not that big but his comic timing is good. Rugby player Vinay Rai has come to films from modeling and his strong personality suits him very well as a villain. Along with Priyanka, Vinay was also in the film Doctor and played the role of a dangerous villain in that too. The rest of the actors have also played their roles properly. Like Tamil films, the action is tremendous in this one too. Twin brothers Anbumani and Arivumani have choreographed action sequences for many blockbuster films like KGF, Doctor, Sarpatta Parambarai, Jai Bheem and the upcoming film Beast. Together they do amazing work and are giving hit films one after the other. Director Pandiraj has written the story and screenplay of this film based on the Pollachi case of 2019, just has not been able to bring that much weight to the dialogue.

The music is by D Imman who is doing his second film with Pandiraj but first film with Suriya. The songs of the film are tremendous hits. Composers GV Prakashkumar and Anirudh (Kolaveri) have given vocals to the song named Valla Thambi and this song was a hit even before the release of the film. MC Rudd’s cow rap Atharakkum Thunindhavan was also very much liked. Cinematography by R Rathnavelu (Robot, Rangasthalam) was up to the demands of the film but editing by Anthony Ruben (Bigil, Pushpa) failed to hold the story together. In the second part of the film, no connection was felt in the scenes and just a train of different incidents was seen. Generally, in the climax, all the threads of the story meet and the villain is defeated, due to the editing, every time that emotion stopped rising. The film is a spicy film. Is a hit at the box office. Surya’s fans will definitely watch the film, if they are fond of watching dubbed films, then they can watch this film, although there are only a few things worth remembering in it.
